Finding employment can be challenging. You have to be your own best cheerleader during a stressful time. Conjuring up enthusiasm about who you are as an employee doesn’t feel like the best thing to do, especially after being fired or laid off. So, how do you market yourself when you are stressed?

We suggest getting creative to raise your spirits. Anyone can write a resume. What about exceeding the resume with a creative job seeking stunt? Try writing a blog about why you are seeking employment. You may not find a job as a result, but you will learn something about yourself.

Make cold calls. That’s right, cold calls. I know people hate doing this but it can work. Call a company that you would like to work for and ask if they are hiring. If they say no then ask if they are accepting resumes. If they are, send your resume in. One never knows who might open it and keep it on file.

Take out advertising using the right code. Facebook and Google offer cheap ad space. I know during a time of unemployment that costs should be kept low, but not when you are investing in yourself and future income. Start off with a hundred dollars and have Facebook or Google promote your online resume using key words. The great thing about using key words and advertising yourself online is that it shows you are aggressive, willing to invest in yourself, and that you are creative. Let’s say you are a handyman. Your ad might look like this, “Honest, licensed and reliable handyman. Affordable, references and English speaking. Call today and I will start tomorrow. My resume is here (url link)”

Be your greatest advocate by taking steps, such as the ones suggested above, to move forward with your job search. It will help you stand out and lift you out of an unemployment depression.
