You just landed a new job. You want to make a great impressions. You show up early. You leave late. But what about your health? Is there a way to take care of your health without your boss thinking you’re a germ nut? What about lunch? Can you go out to lunch with others without partaking in the alcohol or high-calorie foods? Below are my tips for fitting into a new employment environment while also remaining healthy!

#1. Always take the stairs if you are traveling between two to three floors? If you have to go up higher than three floors, take an elevator. You don’t want to arrive anywhere, especially when you are a new employee, as a hot and sweaty mess. But, if you can take the stairs without getting sweaty or winded, do so!

#2. Drink water at work. Coffee can be tempting but it is a diuretic. This means you will be making more trips to the bathroom than if you drink plain water. Water at work is usually free. It cuts down on your bathroom breaks and has far more health benefits than coffee. If you must, have the coffee before you arrive at work and then drink water the rest of the day.

#3. Take eye-breaks. If you are working on a computer all day make a decision to take eye-breaks every hour and on the hour. Once the clock hits the hour mark, look at something else in your office or cubicle for five minutes. You can even excuse yourself to grab a water. These small breaks will help prevent eye problems and mistakes!

#4. Smile! Being optimistic and smiling at your new job, even when it can be stressful and frustrating to learn the ropes, there is overwhelming scientific evidence that optimism makes you healthier.

These four tips can keep you healthy, energetic and efficient at your new job!
