When I started Building Team Solutions my main goal was to provide great employers with a resources for qualified and capable employees.  As I have come to learn, construction companies and trade firms are always in need for employees who are willing to work safely and who have valued experience (or a willingness to learn and get licensed).

We provide assistance with employment. But what if you need to take care of certain housekeeping items internally? I’ve compiled a list of some of the services Building Team Solutions provides, but that you can also take care of internally, which are also specific to the construction and trade industries.

Keeping up on recent employment law is at the top of my list. Here’s why; With regards to maintaining compliance with laws for government contracts and grants, few things are more important to a firm’s success.  We are familiar with employment law for these industries, but you also need to know what the law states and what changes are being made. It is crucial to any business, especially that of construction.

Next on my list is the personal factor. Many business owners can’t step back and remove emotion from the equation when making business decisions.  It can cost a lot to keep someone on that you can’t afford or to improperly fire someone.  We offer a balanced perspective and can help you consider a number of potentially overlooked factors when making staffing decisions. But, if you have to do this on your own- know that you’re running a business.  Employees understand budget cuts, have to accept when they are not performing  well, and know that you’re running a company. Decisions have to be made from an objective perspective and not a personal one.

Last on my list is creating a filing system that everyone knows and sticks to. Construction firms are usually busy bidding and performing, not working on HR files.  The risk to putting files on the back burner arrives when a government agency shows up at the door with audit forms in hand. We can help streamline some paperwork with our employees. However, if you own a construction or trade business know that these files are important for several reasons and they can be pulled by outside parties for many reasons.

Remember, we are here to help you. But, as a construction firm company (or any trade firm) it is always important to know the employment laws, keep great records and keep personal factors away from the business decision making process.
