Twitter. It is so addicting. You can post photos, share your thoughts, comment on world events…the social media tool keeps us connected.  But, many people waste Twitter on personal nonsense when they could use it as an opportunity to find work.

Your Twitter account should focus on you the professional. It should be a social media reflection of your professional career and resume.  Don’t post drinking photos or pictures making fun of others. If you feel the need to do this, set up a private and personal second account.   Hosting a professional Twitter account for yourself makes your insight more valuable and opens up opportunities with companies who also utilize Twitter.

You want to follow the right people, too.  Make sure you are following and engaging decision makers for companies you’d like to be employed by. Don’t follow random people.  Make your following efforts meaningful.

Finally, creating meaningful content is key. Don’t always comment on comments made by others.  Be bold, be daring- say what you feel and mean in a professional way. And use data to back up your comments.  Someone who is able to discuss opposing views or add insight to similar viewpoints isn’t a yes person- instead, companies think of these people as potential leaders.  So, write professional comments showcasing your insight.

While no one is likely to hire you over Twitter, the conversation can begin there.  Finding employment opportunities via Twitter is real. And, because it is real, don’t say anything on Twitter you wouldn’t say directly to your employer’s face.
