Most businesses love hiring creative people. But once the creative person arrives for work, there can be an adjustment period.  Creative people and corporate people tend to work with two different sides of the brain. This can lead to communication problems, perception issues, and so forth. So, how do you manage a creative person to get the best work from them and help promote them within the company? Well, there are some tricks. I’ve listed them below.

  • Set up goals.  Daily deadlines usually won’t work.  You need to set up project goals and timelines. Let the creative person work his or her magic with a target date and project milestones to reference- but without micromanaging interference.
  • Healthy competition is perfect. Creative people tend to like challenges.  If you have a creative team in the office, try to use free PTO time or company lunches as a way to inspire completing work early or coming up with really amazing campaigns / graphics, etc.
  • Jump in the pool. Creative people tend to not like paperwork. They’re busy doing their thing. So, if you can, assign the standard paperwork or mundane aspects of their job to an assistant. Or, become involved in the project by helping with these essential tasks.
  • Be able to say it sucks.  Yes, this may sound harsh but if a creative person isn’t producing or meeting expectations, tell him or her. It is ok to send someone back to the drawing board. But, remember- it is three strikes and your out. Creative work is subjective but if a person delivers three failures in a row- they’re not a right match for your company.
