Yes, your body can prevent you from finding a job. Body language is a very real thing. You can have a gleaming resume or application, but if your body language is terrible then the job will slip out of your fingers. I’ve listed a few mannerisms to stay clear of when on a job interview.

Let’s start with the obvious. Have a great handshake. Make sure your handshake is firm but not harsh. Also, don’t walk into an interview adjusting shoes or any piece of clothing. It shows the employer that you are never prepared or not confident. Always be ready to stand up, shake a hand and then walk into the employer’s office. Fussing with hair, shoes, clothing or purses will hurt your chances for the job.

Stay off your cell phone. In fact, shut it off. If you are on your phone waiting for the employer to call you- and the employer sees this- kiss the job goodbye. This tells employers that you are easily distracted and have something better to do than worry about the job interview.

When in the interview don’t rub the back of your neck. This sends an unspoken signal that you are disinterested in the job or what the employer is saying. Also, don’t rub or touch your nose. Even if your nose is itchy- don’t touch it. Many people are aware of those who touch their noses while talking are usually lying or stretching the truth.

Sitting up straight while leaning forward is a plus. This shows the employer that you are interested in the job and that you will take it seriously. Sitting leaning facing a door or fully back in the chair sends unconscious signals that you are not really looking for work.

There are many books on body language. I recommend the following as it gives both employees and employers valuable insight as to who the people are around you and how to conduct yourself! http://www.barnesandnoble.com/listing/2681664840416?r=1&cm_mmca2=pla&cm_mmc=GooglePLA-_-Book-_-Q000000633-_-2681664840416
