One of the biggest questions our company receives relates to turning temporary employment into a full-time job.  So companies do need temps. Other companies hire temps to test them out for potential full-time positions. If you’re seeking temp work with the hopes of finding a full-time position then this blog post is for you!

Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are trying to turn a temporary job into a full-time career.

  • Know the industry. While most temps are interchangeable (owning skill sets that can be applied to a multitude of industries), not many temps understand each industry they’re assigned to! Even if you aren’t familiar with the industry you’re currently working in, make an effort to learn as much as you can.
  • Be flexible. Show your potential coworkers and your boss that you are willing to work long hours or weekends. I know one woman who worked as 3 month stint as a catering administrator. Her background was in news reporting. While her temp job came to a close, she made an impression while she was working.  As soon as a full-time position within the catering office became available (one year after the temporary position was over), the company called this particular woman because she was flexible- not because she had a lot of catering experience. In fact, she won the position over a senior manager who had 14 years experience because she was willing to work weekends- when most catered events occur.
  • Don’t beg for a full-time job.  It is ok to say you’re interested in finding something full-time- once! Don’t bug temporary employers about gaining full-time work.  If you do this you’re chances for keeping the temporary position are slim!

Remember, not all temporary jobs are going to lead to full-time employment. However, if you follow the above three tips know that your chances of finding full-time work are great.
