Happy-Employees

Our company is in a unique position. We help companies connect with employees. And we help job seekers connect with employment. While our blog often stresses open positions, what companies can improve upon to retain employees, etc. – we’d like to use today’s blog post to cover the traits of great employees.  Some forms of unemployment can’t be prevented. However, poor performance can. Here are some tips to ponder over the Labor Day weekend when it comes to improving your employable game.

Start with becoming more accountable. No one likes a person who passes the buck. Many employers will not pay you if you continue to pass the buck. Owning up to a mistake is a lot better than trying to cover it up or pass it off to someone else.

Know that flexibility is going to be required. You might not get the shift you want, your starting pay may be less than you would prefer…. it doesn’t matter. You will have to prove yourself during the first one to two years of employment. Count these years as paying your dues. Be as flexible as possible and do whatever it takes to please your employer.  This will pay off in the long run.

Great employees also communicate well. It doesn’t matter if you’re a construction worker or an administrative assistant- you have to be able to communicate.  In today’s society, social media and texting is almost the preferred way to communicate. This is tough because tone doesn’t factor into the message. A manager might be feeling agitated when he or she wakes up in the morning. And, chances are, he or she will read your email in an agitated tone even though it was never intended this way.  You not only have to know when to communicate, but you have to master the art of how to communicate. It is crucial to understand when phone calls and in-person conversations take priority over text messaging and/or email.

We here at Building Team Solutions want to wish you all a happy Labor Day. Make sure to tune in on Monday for more employment and managerial advice.
