For whatever reason you may have left your prior job, the answer as to why the separation occurred can be holding you back from obtain future work. Let me stress YOUR answer, and not the actual reason, why you left your prior employer can be the root of the problem.

When you’re asked why you quit or were fired from a job remember to keep the answer simple. Don’t get into the details. Don’t do any bad mouthing and don’t act as if your life ended when your job did. The key to answering questions about your former job is to remain positive and talk about future opportunities and learning experiences.

Employers don’t want to hear about past politics or conflicts with your employer or peers They will not see your point of you as much as they will think you can’t get along with people. Discuss how you weren’t utilized to your full capacity, how you wanted to be a position that allowed you to be more customer orientated or how you felt there was no more room to grow with that particular company and that you wanted to learn more about your industry.

You can move beyond being fired. You can’t move beyond a bad answer as to why!
