PLUMBING SERVICE COMPANIES – WHO GOES DOWN THE DRAIN AND WHOSE ABOVE WATER?

Ethical standards in the plumbing service industry can be hard to come by… (before you light up my email with your rebuttals let me explain):

It’s a well-known fact (from within the industry trade) that MANY (not all) but many.. service plumbing companies put forth business standards that compensate and encourage their service plumbers to go to homes and businesses and find “any and everything” possible to repair or replace.  So in short, if the owner will approve it just DO IT!

IN most cases where I have interviewed both (companies and plumbing service technicians) there is a prevalent culture of  “write it up and get paid”. These techs, their managers and often owners are so engrossed in the profitably of repairing and replacing anything, even when it is not broken, that they are blinded by what’s right and wrong.  SO the old adage “if it aint broke dont fix it” just doesn’t exist in some cases.

The person who benefits is the tech who is getting paid commissions and the owners who gets the profit margin.  The person who benefits is not necessarily the home owner, unless you take the stance that, “well at least its replaced and newer so it will last longer”, which is how one applicant explained to me his viewpoint. To which I can only respond… “ well that really makes the plumbing industry stink” literally and figuratively.

But there is a BRIGHT BOWL at the end of the flush. There are some great plumbing service firms that take pride in not only doing it RIGHT- but doing it honestly and ethically.  They shower their company culture in a work ethic and standard that epitomizes, honesty and intergrity.  Techs are paid excellent benefits and perks for jobs well done, which is based on  ‘client feedback and no call backs” versus just paying commissions for selling more.  Techs take pride in their work and still gross near 6 figures.   Amazing how a little ethical drain cleaning can take you just as far, with better end results.
