Tempers might flare in the workplace. You really should keep your cool and so should your employees. But, this can be easier said than done sometimes. So, how do you keep your cool when something sets you off at work? Here are our top two tips.

#1.  Walk away from the situation. Once you are out of the situation, do something nice for someone. This will help you put the situation and related emotions aside. It also causes your brain to make dopamine, which will inspire more positive energy. Even if you walk out of a heated meetings and walk to buy coffee- also buy coffee for the person standing in line behind you. You don’t need a reason to do it- just buy it. The good deed will change the chemistry in you brain and allow you to think about the situation at hand more clearly while you finish your own coffee.

#2. Don’t take any action for the next 48 hours. You might be steaming mad but you don’t want to quit a job or fire someone recklessly. So, don’t take any action for at least two days. This will allow you to really ensure you are making the proper decisions related to the situation and not related to the emotions surrounding the situation.

We all work. We are all going to face tense situations on the job at one point or another. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you or dictate how you are viewed at work.  Do a good deed for someone and take time to react to situations.
