Those who are entering the workforce for the first time and those who have been out of the workforce for some time all face the same challenge- lack of experience. Here is how to overcome the experience issue on a resume.

Start by focusing on the skills you have. If you have related education credits, note them. Work with what you have and play up how skills can outweigh experience. For example, a person who is applying for a management position may lack management experience. You do have to be truthful on a resume. So, note your prior jobs but add a special section for your management related skills. For example, “Attended Community College at Londonville. While in college I was team-captain of the debate society. I organized travel schedules, spearheaded study groups and worked to resolve inner-group conflicts.”

Furthermore, if you are re-entering the workforce after one or more years get education. Employers hate to see gaps in employment, but it happens- and for various reasons. If you can note that you are currently taking courses to keep up with today’s work environment (even if they are online courses), list them. Employers will consider hiring an employee with experience gaps in his or her resume that is proactive by continuing his or her education.

If you lack experience writing a resume can seem very challenging. Know what skills and education to list, but also try using these tricks:

 1. Don’t list every single job that isn’t relevant to the desired position. I know you may have had other, unrelated jobs. But, don’t list them to try to make up for a lack of experience. Remember, focus on your skill set.

2. Tell the truth. Note that you are aware of a lack of experience and then follow it with how you plan to overcome this challenge on your own time.

3. Be prepared to explain gaps. Employers want to know why you have gaps in your resume. If you can list the reason in a sentence, put it directly on your resume.
