Tax day is tomorrow. If you’re dreading this day then chances are you owe taxes.  As a CEO, our tax rate really is nothing to complain about when compared to individual and other tax rates. The rate is so low that CEOs tend to make more than their actual companies- that is on a large, Wall street level. An article from The Hill recently cited, “A prominent lobby group for chief executives is launching a campaign to build public support for reducing the corporate rate to 25 percent and limiting the taxation of offshore income.” I know there are mixed feelings about the reduction of CEO tax rates. I’m sure it depends on what side of the tax bracket you really are on.

As a business owner and CEO, it is important for me to conduct business morally and ethically. I expect the same from my clients and the employees who I refer out to companies. What’s this have to do with taxes? I’ll tell you. CEO taxes are out of control when you consider the debt our country has accumulated. Small business owners are taxed and taxed and taxed, making it difficult to hire and sustain employees- which cuts into my company’s business. And, because many CEOs are overpaid, fewer manpower and administrative jobs are currently available. The situation isn’t a win-win but it isn’t an easy fix, either.

Individual business owners have a tax rate of 39.6% right now, which was increased late in 2012. This increase led to higher taxes on thousands of small businesses that pay taxes through the individual code.  A business owner making a profit of $100,000 would have to pay $39,600 in taxes. A corporation making a profit of $100,000 would be liable for only $25,0000 in taxes- if any are paid at all because of pass through laws and loopholes.

My point is that paying taxes should be fair for both CEOs of corporations and individual business owners. We all have to work hard. We all need supportive staff. We all need to reinvest as much of our profits as possible in order to see true business growth.
