If you’re considering making construction your career, know that you are in for a rewarding adventure. There are many types of job in the construction field. In fact, CNN recently named Construction Estimator as one of America’s most “booming” careers right now.  Jobs for Construction Estimators rose last year by 10% with a median pay of 68k.

Construction jobs are divided into two basic areas. Manual labor and managerial positions. If you’re seeking to start a career in construction  you should start looking at the manual labor positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average construction wage was $25.70 per hour last year. This is nationwide. And the construction industry is coming back with a vengeance  It took a dive in 2008 but now is the time to launch a career in the field- as job are readily available.

When choosing what field in the construction industry you want to explore make sure to do your research. Workers may perform carpentry or general labor tasks, including wood framing, door installation, drywall work, and other tasks. Other workers can specialize in various trades, such as plumbing, electrical systems, masonry, concrete, or painting. We suggest you explore your skills and interests before beginning your job search. What do you like? What are you good at? What area of construction may not appeal to you? These are all questions you should ask yourself, and answer, before starting your search.

When you do decide what area of construction to start in, experience will come into play.  Although there are plenty of construction jobs available, you have to understand that the competition has experience. Schooling will become a must!  Most trade schools and community colleges offer certificates or courses in trades such as carpentry, HVAC, electrical work, and plumbing.  Local unions and  may also offer apprenticeship programs.
