Being an executive is hard. No, I am not complaining. But, I am saying our current work culture is changing – and not always for the best. What I mean is that our social media accounts seem to be taking over our lives and leading to a 24/7 work day. I see people all the time having breakfast with their families and sending emails from their phones. Even better, the birthday dinner that is being multi-tasked with viewing a web presentation at work from an iPad. Where have our personal lives gone?

This fourth of July I want you to think about really taking the day off and using the time to unwind and focus on your family. It is possible to go 24 hours without touching, looking at, or using your cell phone. In fact, why not try it this Thursday?!  We’ve become so plugged into work because of mobile phones, social media, etc. that we have officially blurred the line between working in the office and checking in “once in a while” when we are away.  While it is great to be in the loop and involved in the day-to-day at work, we (not just executives, but everyone) need to take time to relax and be in the moment without distractions.

There will be no blogs for Building Team Solutions tomorrow or on the 4th of July. I’m unplugging a bit to regroup, be in the moment, and celebrate the holiday. I hope you can too!

Happy early 4th of July!
