Here’s an issue I run into every once in a blue moon- a business owner who refuses to delegate but wants to hire someone. Yes, there are people out there who know they need help but can’t let go of their control issues. Listen, in business you’re going to have to hire. In fact, the need to hire means you’re growing- a very good thing. But you can’t do it on your own. You will need a great support team behind you.

If you’re having trouble delegating work and responsibility, you’re know alone. That’s why I decided to publish my top five tips to help you delegate and lead better.

1. Define what has to be done clearly and simply.
2. Explain you will not be micro-managing and the person who is on the receiving end of the delegating will be expected to manage all aspects of this project. You should also define what the checks and balances are and what will happen if the person fails to carry out the task.
3. Be clear about deadlines.

Many people say “I need you to finish project X.” Don’t assume your employee is up to speed on Project X and you also have to define what needs to be done in order to finish project X. A better way of delegating this tasks would be to say “I need you to finish the presentation for project X and then set up a meeting with the client. Make sure you invite everyone who has worked on the project until now. Don’t forget to set up lunch in the office that day for the client. I expect to have a copy of the presentation on my desk 48 hours before the meeting with the client. Oh, and make that meeting a Tuesday and for next month.” You see, this clearly notes what needs to be done, how soon and what your expectations are versus a generic statement.

I hope you have a great weekend. A new blog will be up on Monday.
