You have to conduct an interview.  And, you’re just as nervous as the candidate. Or, maybe you’re not.  Either way- don’t let nerves or lack of nerves impact the interview.

Studies show one of the worst ways to conduct an interview is by performing it a coffee shop.  Yes, at a coffee shop. Many employers are trying to use the Google model to rearrange their work culture. And, while Google receives high praise for their work environment, trying to put someone at ease by conducting a coffee shop interview isn’t going to work.

A candidate might have to disclose personal information that can be heard within earshot of other patrons. And, this information (well, the in advert sharing of it) can make you liable- especially if the information has to do with ADA accommodations, work release programs, etc.

Also, if your potential candidate is currently employed- then the interview could be shared with other people at his or her current company.  This can create many problems for the person being interviewed, especially if you don’ hire him or her.

Interviews should never be conducted in a public place. Furthermore, interviews should have both parties full attention. I recently read about an interview conducted by a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. While the candidate was answering questions, the CEO was browsing Facebook.

Do you think Google’s culture as influenced this bad behavior? Or, do you think our professional culture is moving further into a more open way of operating? I’m interested to read your opinions here, on Facebook or Twitter.
